Willie Wolf is recognized for being, in the words of the Washington Post, “one of the most polished baseball players ever to graduate from Central High. Noted for his determination and speed, Wolf was captain and center fielder of the City Champions Central High School Baseball Team (1927-1928); captain, leadoff hitter and center fielder of the City All-High Team (1928); and captain and second baseman of the University of Maryland varsity Baseball Team (1933-34). At the age of 18, Wolf was signed by the New York Giants and sent to its AA Bridgeport Team.
