Heyison was an All-County basketball and baseball player at Springbrook High School. He turned down a professional contract from the Cincinnati Reds in 1980 to attend George Washington University on a baseball scholarship. As a freshman, he Jed the team in homeruns. As ajunior in 1983, he was the 5th leading hitter in the nation, batting .461 with a slugging percentage over .900, Jed the country in triples and tied the school record for homeruns. He was first team All-East Coast 3rd baseman; first team All-Atlantic Ten 3rd baseman. In 1983, Heyison was drafted in the 9th round by the Baltimore Orioles- the highest draft pick in GWU school history. He was elected to the George Washington University Sports Hall of Fame in 1996
