Phil Perlo
Phil Perlo is recognized as one of the best football players to emerge from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. During his senior year at Washington’s Roosevelt High, Perlo led his team to the City Championship as quarterback and linebacker. The only Jewish player recruited by the great University of Maryland coach Jim Tatum, Perlo was the starting linebacker and fullback on the 1956 Maryland championship team that went to the Orange Bowl. In 1960, the Houston Oilers recruited Perlo as their starting linebacker. Although injury cut short Perlo’s sports career, the excitement of those years shines brightly for us all.
