The Bender JCC is the premier aquatics facility in Montgomery County offering aquatics-based group exercise classes, family swim, instructional swim lessons, lap swimming, and more all in our indoor and outdoor pools – both heated and open all year, even through the winter!
Dive Into Our Community
Cruise down our water-slides and soak-up the fun in our water-play area. Swim laps or take a leisurely, refreshing dip in our two pools. Learn to swim or try a challenging, aquatics-based exercise class. Whether you’re first dipping your toes into the water or regularly dive into the deep end, the Bender JCC’s aquatics programs will make a splash with your wellness routine! From water-based group exercise classes like Aqua Zumba and parent-child swim classes like Water Babies and Water Tots, to private and semi-private swim lessons and the Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program for swimmers with orthopedic-related disabilities, the Bender JCC offers aquatics programs for all abilities, ages, life-stages, and swim-levels.
Private and Semi-Private Swim Lessons
The Bender JCC offers our members private (one-on-one with an instructor) or semi-private swim lessons (two students per instructor) in 30-minute increments. Whether you are first learning to swim, refining your stroke technique, or improving your conditioning, you will receive the expert instruction and personalized attention needed to lap your goals. Our experienced, friendly, and qualified instructors help swimmers of all ages, life-stages, and skill-levels feel cool in the pool.

Youth Group Swim Classes and Group Swim Lessons
The Bender JCC of Greater Washington offers youth swim classes and youth swim lessons designed to introduce new swimmers to the pool and teach them fundamental swim skills and strokes.
Introduction to water skills focusing on water acclimation. This course is for children who cannot be in the water independently without using a flotation device. Children are in the water with the instructor, parents may watch from the deck.
Skills needed to pass Level 1 include:
- Entering the water in steps or jumping in independently
- Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects
- Front gliding 2 body lengths, and back floating for 3 seconds
- Exiting the water independently
This course continues to teach fundamental aquatic skills. To enroll in Level 2 swimmers must be able to enter the water using steps or jump in independently; open their eyes underwater and retrieve a submerged object.
Skills required to pass Level 2 include:
- Bobbing
- Front glide
- Using some combined arm action for two body lengths
- Floating on back for 15 seconds
- Exiting water independently.
Level 3 builds on the skills taught in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water. To enroll in Level 3, swimmers must be able to:
- Enter water by jumping in
- Use rotary breathing
- Back float for 30 seconds
- Treading water for 30 seconds
Skills needed to pass Level 3 include:
- Entering water by jumping from the side
- Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
- Bobbing while moving toward safety
- Rotary breathing
- Survival float
- Flutter, scissor, dolphin, and breaststroke kicks on front
- Elementary backstroke
- Front crawl for 15 yards
Level 4 further develops the skills swimmers learned in Levels 1-3, and improves other aquatic skills. To enroll in Level 4, swimmers must be able to:
- Enter water by jumping from the side
- Enter water headfirst from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
- Moving towards safety while bobbing
- Use rotary breathing and survival float
- Use flutter, scissor, dolphin, and breaststroke kicks on front
- Use the elementary backstroke
- Front crawl for 15 yards
Skills needed to pass Level 4 include:
- Making a compact dive and stride dive, head first
- Treading water with two kicks
- Front crawl the length of the pool
- Elementary backstroke, length of the pool
- Breaststroke, Butterfly and Sidestroke for 15 yards
Parent and child learn together in the water in this introductory water class that uses a gentle, low-key approach with techniques to aid in teaching the child’s progress. Using verbal cues and body language, children will be introduced to basic swim skills including back float, kicking, and reaching, with assistance from the parent. Songs and games are incorporated.
Parent and child learn together in the water in this class that introduces basic swimming skills such as back float, kicking, reaching, and blowing bubbles. Parents will assist their child with each technique. The skills learned will prepare children for entry into Level 1.
Aquatics Group Exercise
Free to members, the Bender JCC’s water-based group fitness classes are low-impact, total body workouts ideal for all ages. Jump into our pools and active wellness community with aquatic-based group exercise classes.
This low-impact cardiovascular-focused class takes place in the pool and is designed to improve mobility and endurance.
Easy on the joints designed to increase flexibility and muscle tone.
A gentle pool workout with emphasis on using all the muscles and joints to gain strength and flexibility.
Join us in the shallow-end of the pool for an aerobics workout fused with familiar Pilates movements.
A high-energy Latin dance in the water.
Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program
For decades, the Gudelsky Exceptional Swim Program has helped children, teens, and adults with orthopedic-related disabilities enjoy aquatics. The program partners professional staff members (a coordinator, physical therapist, and adaptive water instructors) and volunteers with participants to teach swimming basics and help students feel comfortable in the water.

Aquatic Physical Therapy
Offered in the Bender JCC’s Indoor Pool through ProAction Physical Therapy, our on-campus community partner, water-based physical therapy water is ideal for individuals who may otherwise struggle to tolerate their physical rehabilitation treatments “on land” as it enables pain-free stretching and helps improve overall mobility. ProAction’s expertly trained therapists specialize in providing aquatic physical therapy to benefit:
- Arthritis
- Back and neck pain
- Balance and gait difficulties
- Chronic pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Joint replacements & other types of surgery
- Neurological disorders
- Poor conditioning/endurance
Aquatic Physical Therapy is covered by Medicare and most medical insurance plans when it is prescribed by a physician. There is no extra cost for participating in Aquatic Therapy sessions.
