A three-sport athlete as a schoolboy, Phil Waganheim graduated from Northwood High School and played basketball at Montgomery College before playing major college football at the University of Maryland. Phil was considered one of the college game’s finest kicking specialists, averaging 42.6 yards per punt, with a 41.5 yard net return average, best in the nation. Phil played in the Peach Bowl vs. Georgia and in the Liberty Bowl’s vs Tennessee. Phil’s punting technique was featured in the Scholastic Coach Magazine and he held Maryland punting records for 19 years. Phil was also an All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Athlete, graduating with honors from University of Maryland. Phil was selected in the 10th round (236th selection) of the National Football League draft by the Baltimore Colts and played for the Los Angeles Rams and the New York Jets.
