Gittleson played All-High basketball at Western High School and was awarded a basketball scholarship to George Washington University. At the age of 44, Gittleson became a self-taught tennis player. What he lacked in style, he made up for in “smart” play, and was soon competing successfully in amateur tennis tournaments. In 1989, Gittleson tried out for the 13th Maccabiah Games, and at 64 years was chosen as the oldest member of the 55-and-over Masters Team.
