49% of children with Autism and 26.7% of individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities elope (often from a safe environment), more than a third cannot communicate their name, address or phone number, and 71% of deaths related to wandering are caused by drowning. Officers from the Montgomery County Police Autism/Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), Alzheimer’s and Dementia Outreach Unit and Pathfinders for Autism will present a critical training that addresses reasons why individuals might elope, safety preventive measures parents and caregivers can put into place and what information is most beneficial for police if your loved one goes missing.
This event is offered in a hybrid capacity, with the option of in-person or virtual attendance. In person attendance is encouraged, and attendees will have access to a wealth of resources and handouts from the Bender JCC and supporting agencies.
