Current Opposition to Circumcision in the West

Wednesday, April 21 | 2:00 PM | On Zoom

Join the JCC Men’s Club for a talk by Dr. Allan Jacobs, Director, Gynecological Oncology, Coney Island Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, SUNY Downstate Medical School. Infant circumcision is a core part of Judaism. It is expected in mainstream Judaism that Jewish boys will be circumcised on the eighth day of life. But there has been an increasing groundswell among Christian and secular intellectuals and politicians to abolish circumcision. This movement is strongest in Northern Europe but is increasingly felt in the United States. Dr. Jacobs will critique the reasons given for opposing circumcision. He will maintain that they are not convincing, and that, even if they were valid, they would not constitute a reason to abolish the practice. Open to the community. –
